Flipping the classroom has transformed our teaching practice. This radical change has allowed the teachers to take on a different role with their students. The lecture method of teaching has become obsolete, monotonous and traditional. The flipped classes have changed the face of teaching in the school. Teachers have adopted this model and are using it to teach classes in all curriculum areas to elementary, middle and high school students. A flipped classroom is a learning environment where students learn new content on their own by watching video lectures or other online sources and assigned problems are completed in class with teachers offering personalized guidance instead of lectures. Besides, a flipped classroom allows students to learn on their own time and at their own pace. When a student is watching a video lecture, for instance, the lecture is free of interruptions to distract the students and can be replayed as often as the student would like. Students when engaged with a digital lesson or watch a video at home, can brainstorm questions to their teachers which can open the floor for a discussion about anything that may have been unclear or confusing. A flipped classroom is created through a video of the lesson or string together multiple online and digital resources into a lesson. The video or the digital lesson is then shared with students via the schools email system or the teacher’s site or even tweet the link to the students. Thus, flipping a classroom is a great way to change up the teaching style and give the students a new way to learn the material.

Open House Discussion...An Eye opener to young adults.
Realizing the modernity prevailing in the society and various kinds of unhealthy activities undertaken by our present youth, an open house discussion was held for the students of class XI and XII. It focused on ‘The prevailing culture and its impact on society’.
Principal Madam Ms. Alka Kapur, Vice Principal Ms. Mena Mittle, Director Academics Ms. Geeta Sehgal and some senior teachers comprised the discussion panel. The event provided a platform for our young adults to openly express their views and concerns on day to day social abuses seen in the society in the form of smoking, alcohol, drug usage, physical and verbal abuses, unhealthy dietary disorders to name a few. Students discussed that most of the times they were forced to adopt an activity under peer pressure or as a statement of style amidst their young “cool” society. Madam Principal and other panelist affirmed the need amongst the adolescents to be judicious and clever in judging between good’s and bad’s around them and work towards holistic development of each one’s physical, mental, social and spiritual personality.
Circle Talk which aims at building collaboration, respect and positive behaviour amongst students is the most innovative strategy adopted by the school. Circle talk is a gathering in which all the students sit in a circle facing each other to facilitate open direct communication. This gives an opportunity to all class students to talk about various topics, work through differences and form a conclusion. Teachers include themselves in the circle to signal that they are facilitators and listeners during these gatherings. Circle talk gives the day a great start by inviting students to share their feelings and listen to others. Often students come into the classroom wound up, or looking sad and perhaps giving them a chance to voice their opinion helps them to calm down or feel better. Moreover, sitting in a circle is a fundamentally different experience than sitting in rows or meeting across a desk wherein each person takes the lead in turn, each time it is their turn to speak. The space is arranged in such a manner that there are no tables or desks between students or in the middle of the circle. Each participant gets a chance to give vent to their feelings and thereby emerges as a winner.
It forms a group of students who meet together to identify, analyze, solve and implement the solutions to a given sensitive topic. Practicing this concept with the help of Power Point Presentations help the students to acquire knowledge in problem solving process and continually improve their skill for their self and mutual development. It gives opportunity to each and every student to show their capability, hidden talent and creative thinking. This boosts their morale, builds up confidence and develops their speaking skills where each one tries to be a good orator. The topic thus discussed sums up on a positive note and the audience gains an insight to understand and act on issues of global significance.
Reading makes a man perfect. Such is the spirit that reverberates in the school premises during Reading Time. All the children observe reading for 15 minutes when they drop everything and just read. All the enthusiasts participate in the activity and engross themselves in reading any section of the newspaper supplied to them by NIE. Students spend some quality time in exploring different variant of the newspaper like school is cool, career, viewpoint etc. The time claimed is in itself to be as it aims at inculcating the habit of reading for pleasure amongst all as everyone understands the value of non-academic reading.
With an aim to stimulate professional growth of teachers, peer observation is conducted every month. A teacher in her free period visits any class to observe the teacher teaching in that particular class. The observer assesses her on various parameters such as blackboard work, clarity etc. Thereafter the assessor shows the remarks to the peer so that she can improve her learning, teaching paradigms. Such an endeavour sesitises the teacher to improve pedagogy and skill development.
Peer teaching provides concrete and practical guidance to teachers. In this exclusive programme parallel teachers of a subject exchange their classes to teach a concept in which she has an expertise. The other teacher gets an opportunity to observe her colleague’s class to master the topic. This lays a strong foundation to demonstrate proficiency and deeper understanding. In addition they think critically, analyze, evaluate and synthesize complex ideas. The entire learning process exhorts teachers to empower children and strengthen their skills, competencies and abilities so that they not only become achievers but also become assets for the school.
To nurture hidden talent of the students and to boost up their confidence level, extempore during morning assembly is conducted regularly. Students are called randomly from different classes to enhance their confidence and public speaking. They express their views on the topic of their own choice fearlessly. The students performance not only displays their creativity but also learn the nuances of public speaking like mike etiquettes and use of appropriate body language. Such an endeavour helps to develop good communication skills, clarity of thoughts and ability to express one’s own view point. It gives them a platform to speak their heart out.
The school has established a ‘quiet time’ period during the school hours of 5 to 10 minutes when students sit quietly to meditate, reflect on what has happened that day or simply rest. Even a few minutes meditation give students and teachers a sense of calm and peace of mind that benefits their emotional and physical health. In fact, meditation helps teachers to be calm and confident in dealing with the students. For the children, it is good to get over their stress and enhance their learning experience. Nowadays it is a stressful experience for students with worries about peer pressure, studies, future decisions and competition. Regular practice of meditation is the need of the hour --- to reverse these negative experiences and prepare for a bright future. Meditation period is thus a blessing in disguise as it makes children calmer, more peaceful, happier and relaxed - every time they practice it.
The school greatly influences fruit intake among children by setting aside a short fruit break during morning for about 5-10 minutes so that students can snack on fruit, which aids concentration and prevents hunger. This fruit break not only improves the overall intake of fruits in students while at school but also ensures all the students have some nutritious food early in the morning, especially as some children do not eat breakfast. In fact, fruit break also helps to improve student’s concentration and learning capacity. It has been observed that kids are more likely to eat fruits if their friends are doing it too. Moreover, if other snacks are not an option, then kids are more likely to eat fruits, as they form an important part of a healthy diet.
The key to zero waste being embraced by Modernites is a comprehensive educational programme that extends across the entire campus. The students do not use the dustbins in the class; instead bring a cotton bag to throw waste in it. The cleanliness monitors not only inspect the classroom at the end of the day but also maintain a register to keep themselves updated with the status of cleanliness in each and every class. This drive has reduced the waste and the classrooms have a pristine look. Students have imbibed the essence of zero waste i.e. reduce, reuse and recycle to minimize waste.
